Access Statement for Boots and Boards B&B, Silecroft, Cumbria

Introduction

This access statement aims to describe the facilities and services that we offer to our guests/visitors. It is hoped that the information provided will help people with disabilities to decide whether a stay at Boots and Boards B&B would be practical, safe and comfortable for them. If you have any specific questions please feel free to call us and we will endeavour to help.

Pre-Arrival

  • Directions can be found on the website, or sent to you if required.
  • Public transport is very limited but there is a train service from Carlisle to the North and Barrow-in-Furness to the South.  Silecroft station is just 50 level metres from Boots and Boards, with one small lane to cross. By special arrangement we can meet your train to help you with luggage and take you to the B&B.  Please be aware that there is NO train service on Sundays.

Arrival & Car Parking Facilities 

  • We are on the main street of the village, just past the railway crossing.  
  • The front door opens directly from the pavement. Drop-offs can be made here.
  • Car parking is in a paved area to the rear of the property, accessed by turning right immediately after the level crossing, BEFORE reaching the front of the house. There are no marked parking bays but there is ample room for cars.
  • The surface is level, flat and brick paved, and access to the front of the house is via a passageway (width 2m) to the side of the house, and a small gate, width 86cm.
  • We can assist guests with luggage.  

    Main Entrance
  • The front door has one step 1cm high and is 106cm wide.
  • On entry to the hallway there is a step 17cm high and an L shaped hallway, minimum width 84cm.
  • Flooring in the hallway is ceramic tiles.

    Public Areas - General (Internal) 
  • The guest dining and sitting rooms, and emergency exit (via the kitchen) all open off the hallway. Doorways are 84cm wide.
  • All doorways contrast with the surrounding wall colour.
  • All doorways, (with the exception of the front door, the door to the shared bathroom and the en-suite doors) are self-closing fire doors.
  • All the bedrooms are on the first floor.  Access is from the hallway, via a carpeted stairway with a half landing.
  • The staircase is 88cm wide, with a step height of 18cm. There 17 stairs, including the half landing.
  • The house is centrally heated, with thermostatic radiators in all rooms accessible to guests.
  • We do not play background music in any area of the B&B.
  • There are smoke detectors in all rooms apart from the shared bathroom and en-suites, and fire sounders in all guest bedrooms, as well as in the hallway and on the landing.
  • Evacuation is via the front door or through the (private) kitchen to the back door if necessary.
  • All areas are well lit, but an additional reading light can be supplied on request.

    Public Areas – washing and toilet facilities 
  • Guests share the use of the bath, which is in a small room opening from the first floor landing (see below). 
  • There are no public or shared toilet and hand wash basins. (All are within the en-suite shower rooms).

Dining Room

  • Breakfast is served in the dining room. There are no steps.
  • Cooked breakfast is served but you can help yourself to fruit juices, hot drinks, toast, cereals and fruit.
  • We are able to cater for varying dietary requirements. Please advise us when making a booking.
  • Crockery is colour contrasted with the table.
  • Guests are seated around the one large table. 
  • The table height is 74cm with 60cm leg room, and it has legs on each corner.
  • Chairs are 43cm high and can be moved as appropriate.
  • A highchair for babies and toddlers is available on request.
  • Menus can be provided in large print.

Sitting Room

  • Guests are welcome to relax in the sitting room. There are no steps.
  • Two settees (seat height 40cm) are provided, together with a table (height 74cm) and four dining chairs (height 46cm). 
  • A log fire can be lit on request.
  • There is no TV in the sitting room.  

 
Bedrooms

Helvellyn Room (double, en-suite)

  • Door width 81cm.
  • Double bed, height 65cm.
  • One dining type chair.
  • Fitted short pile carpet on the floor.
  • TV with remote control.
  • Self serve tea/coffee tray.

En-suite shower and toilet room; not suitable for wheelchair access.

  • Door width 74cm.
  • Shower cubicle edge/step is 32cm high. 
  • The small pedestal washbasin is rounded at the front and 79cm high.
  • Toilet is 43cm high
     

Pillar Room (twin, en-suite)

  • Door width 81cm.
  • Two single beds, height 54cm.
  • One dining type chair.
  • Stripped floorboards with 3 rugs.
  • TV with remote control.
  • Self serve tea/coffee tray.

En-suite shower and toilet room; not suitable for wheelchair access.

  • Door width 74cm.
  • Shower cubicle edge/step is 28cm high. 
  • The small pedestal washbasin is rounded at the front and 79cm high.
  • Toilet is 43cm high


Langdale Room (twin, en-suite)

  • Door width 80cm.
  • Two single beds, height 54cm.
  • One dining type chair.
  • Stripped floorboards with 3 rugs.
  • TV with remote control.
  • Self serve tea/coffee tray.

En-suite shower and toilet room; not suitable for wheelchair access.

  • Door width 73cm.
  • Shower cubicle edge/step is 25cm high. 
  • The pedestal washbasin is rounded at the front and 83cm high.
  • Toilet is 41cm high

Coniston Room (family room, en-suite)

  • Door width 80cm.
  • Two bunk beds, height 60cm and 137cm.
  • One double bed height 53cm.
  • One dining type chair.
  • Stripped floorboards with 2 rugs.
  • TV with remote control.
  • Self serve tea/coffee tray.

En-suite shower and toilet room; not suitable for wheelchair access.

  • Door width 73cm.
  • Shower cubicle edge/step is 27cm high. 
  • The pedestal washbasin is rounded at the front and 83cm high.
  • Toilet is 41cm high

Shared Bathroom

  • The room is accessed through a door 75cm wide, and the bath height is 56cm.
  • A non-slip bath mat is available.

Laundry

  • Laundry can be done for you, or wet clothes dried, on request.

Grounds and Gardens

  • We have a large courtyard area for parking surrounded by flower borders and pot plants.
  • Seating can be made available.


Other Nearby Facilities

  • The village tennis court and children’s play area with seating are situated about 50 metres from the back gate.

Shops 

  • There is a small shop stocking some basic essentials at Silecroft Holiday Park, approximately 1 mile down the lane.  Opening times vary. A mobile post office visits the village hall on Wednesday mornings from 9 – 11.30.  Other shops are in Millom, 3.5 miles away.
  • Fair-trade items are displayed in the dining room, and can be purchased. 
  • Some things which you may have forgotten, (eg shampoo or hairdryer) can be found on the round table on the first floor landing, for shared use.
  • Other items such as toothbrushes, face flannels and suntan cream are available for purchase; please ask.

Additional Information
 

  • All dogs are welcomed by arrangement, but are not permitted in Helvellyn Room.  
  • Mobile phone reception is patchy.   Guests are welcome to use our land-line.
  • We are a no smoking building (smoking is allowed in the courtyard area).
  • We can accept small items of food/medication for storage in our fridge, with access by arrangement.  A very small portable fridge is available for loan on request.
